Bio

Susan Smith is a British artist based in Somerset. She holds a BA (Hons) in Visual Communication and spent more than two decades as a graphic designer in the UK and US before training as a homeopath.

Her parallel lives in art and healing became deeply intertwined following a serious car accident in 2017, which profoundly altered her relationship with perception. In the years of isolation that followed, she began to see beyond the surface of things.

This way of seeing was already present in her homeopathic work: every client carries two realities, a contracted world of unconscious patterns and inherited stories and, beneath it, the soul's blueprint.

Her book, Soul Signatures: Blueprints of Transcendence, grew from a search for a remedy's essence beyond its symptoms — the invisible pattern bridging both worlds.

At the root of Smith's work lies an exploration of paradox. In homeopathy, the more a substance is diluted, the more potent it becomes — power increasing as matter disappears. Painting works the opposite way: she builds layer upon layer, adding matter to reach something immaterial.

Tracey Emin once said, "I need art like I need God." Smith discovered she needed both. Before the crash, she had fallen in love with the Hebrew letters — the Letters of Light — already potentised as homeopathic remedies.

She came to see them as doorways into what Kabbalists call The World to Come — each an entry into a light the soul already recognises.

From this ground The Returning Light emerged: divine light descending into matter, remembered beneath the contracted self. Smith's work was exhibited at the Unity Conference, Glastonbury, in 2024, and is held in private collections. Her paintings bring that light into form and share its potency with the world.

Artists Statement

As a homeopath who paints, I'm obsessed by the question: can I make visual art behave like a living prescription of light? Can art become a healing mirror of consciousness? I want to paint light — not the light that falls on things, but the light that animates the living form.

A new remedy to break the spell of forgetting. My fascination with the light of creation brought me to the Letters of Light — the 22 Hebrew letters and the 72 Names of God. For centuries, they have been used in the Kabbalistic tradition as contemplative doorways into states of consciousness, piercing through darkness to reveal what has been forgotten. They have also been potentised as homeopathic remedies. I was curious if I could bring their potency to life in paint.

When you look, you are not seeing a painting; you are seeing a world — one that speaks across time, across galaxies. It holds within it a "now" you can inhabit, pulling you away from ego's lies. The paintings invite you through a doorway towards a different version of yourself.

I paint in acrylics because I build layers. I use pastels, gold dust and matt paint to carry different absorptions of light. As cadmium yellow overlays a pale violet, a third colour is born that neither pigment contains alone. I ask: what is its consequence? What is it holding?

Each painting begins in meditation. The shapes of Hebrew letters, meditated upon, linger behind my eyes — stepladders to the heavens. The artist wonders what colour this feeling is. The homeopath quietly bottles its potency, diligently recording its soul signature.
