PAINTINGS

From the Zohar

The Zohar

The hidden language of creation.
A wellspring of spiritual light.
Gateways to the Upper Worlds.

The Zohar is regarded as one of the great mystical texts of the Kabbalah. Its Aramaic letters are understood not only to convey wisdom but to embody spiritual light itself. These paintings are an invitation to enter that mystery—visual meditations that give form to the worlds the Zohar reveals.

Painting titled The Prayer – Releasing All Judgment. Soft luminous layers of pale green, cream, turquoise, blush pink and warm gold create an atmospheric field of light, threaded with delicate gestural marks and translucent circular forms. Lines of Aramaic text from the Zohar appear throughout the composition in white, sky blue, rose pink, orange, bright yellow and lavender, floating gently within the painted surface as though emerging from the light itself. Fine calligraphic lines and sweeping brushstrokes weave through the background, creating a sense of quiet movement and spaciousness. The painting is a meditation on the Zohar's prayer of absolution, inviting the release of judgement through divine compassion and the awakening of the heart to love.

The Prayer

Painting titled The World to Come – Secrets of Resurrection. Luminous fields of radiant yellow, soft pink, pale turquoise, lavender and white merge across the canvas in a flowing atmosphere of colour and light. Delicate gestural brushstrokes flow across translucent layers, while fine splashes of cerulean blue paint and swirling white forms create a gentle sense of movement between two luminous realms. Vibrant passages of rose pink emerge from the surrounding light. The painting is a meditation on the soul's journey between worlds, inviting contemplation of transformation, continuity and the Light that accompanies every transition.

The World to Come

Painting titled Flood of Light – Decimating Darkness. Vibrant layers of luminous yellow, chartreuse, lime green and pale cream sweep across the canvas in an energetic field of light. Broad translucent patches of colour intersect with vivid magenta facets, creating moments of contrast within the radiant field of light. The painting is a meditation on the flood of divine light dissolving darkness and restoring the soul to wholeness.

Flood of Light

Painting titled Garden of Eden – Dreams of the Heart. Luminous layers of vibrant pink, fresh green, turquoise, pale blue, lemon yellow and white weave together across the canvas in an energetic field of colour and light. Delicate gestural brushstrokes, flowing lines and scattered splashes of paint create a rich sense of movement, while translucent veils of colour reveal countless subtle layers beneath the surface. A radiant centre of soft yellow-green light gently emerges from within the composition, drawing the eye into its quiet stillness amidst the surrounding energy. The painting is a meditation on the Light of the Garden of Eden, inviting the heart to remember its original wholeness and the quiet restoration of hope, healing and dreams.

Garden of Eden

Painting titled Becoming – One Harmonious Whole. A fine tapestry of single brushstrokes moves up and down the canvas. Soft turquoise, pale blue, olive green, lavender, blush pink and warm cream weave through the composition, interwoven with luminous droplets of yellow, white, coral, cobalt blue and lime green. Two large Hebrew Names of God emerge softly from within the layered field, one glowing yellow (Aleph Nun Yud) above and the other rose pink (Vav Hei Vav) below, appearing to arise naturally from the surrounding colours. The painting is a meditation on the underlying unity of creation, inviting contemplation of harmony, connection and the remembrance that all worlds are woven into one living whole.

Becoming

The Two Gardens – Cleansing the Soul. A whirlwind of blazing yellow, dusky pink and lush greens forms the foundation of this garden. Expressive, tender brushstrokes move through pale blues, lime green and vibrant cadmium orange, suffusing the painting with a quiet sense of healing. Rich pigments capture intangible moments, while subtle layers of white, light blue and pale violet reveal the unfolding of a soul's long history within the creative act itself. The painting is a meditation on the gentle release of what has long been carried.

The Two Gardens – Being in Eden. A galaxy of vibrant yellows, grass green, pale blues, lilacs and lush greens gives form to a new realm of being. Rich magenta brushstrokes dance across the canvas, playful and inviting. Patches of blue peek through the vibrant yellows, growing larger as the eye travels diagonally upwards towards a semi-disguised globe in the upper corner, evoking the feeling of gazing into the heavens. A meditation on remembering Eden: a realm without story.

The Two Gardens — Being in Eden

"The paintings from the Zohar followed my desire to connect to the perfected world, where all pain and suffering are removed."
– SUSAN SMITH

The Zohar does not ask to be understood. It asks to be received.

I could not read the ancient Aramaic. I knew nothing of its language. Yet something within me recognised it. Simply resting my eyes upon its pages quietened the mind and opened a place beyond thought.

The first painting arose from a prayer for the soul—a passage of absolution, in which judgement is dissolved, and the soul is restored.

From there, the paintings unfolded one by one. Each revealed another facet of the worlds held within the Zohar, drawing me ever deeper into its vision of all worlds returning to harmony.

I have come to think of the Zohar as The Book of Light. These paintings are the beginning of that lifelong conversation.
